Washington Park - Excellence in Masterplanned Communities

Washington Park a highly successful urban renewal project in Sydney's Riverwood North, has been awarded it's second industry accolade in less than a fortnight.

Following hot on the heels of its win at the 2016 Urban Taskforce Development Awards late last month where the project was named Best Masterplanned Community, Washington Park has received the Commendation Award for Excellence in Masterplanned Communities at the 2016 Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW Awards held in Sydney this week (5 August 2016).

A Benchmark for innovative community development – Mr Brian Boyd.

The Washington Park project at Riverwood is a remarkable achievement. A unique and collaborative private partnership involving property development and investment company PAYCE, Land and Housing Corporation, the NSW Government's Department of Family and Community Services and Canterbury-Bankstown Council, St George Community Housing and the local community.

PAYCE's Managing Director, Brian Boyd said, "we are tremendously proud of what has been accomplished at Washington Park and impressed by how well the concept has been received".

"Washington Park is truly an integrated community who share and enjoy a wonderful lifestyle in an equally wonderful environment," continued Mr Boyd.

"The project is a showcase for how well-masterplanned urban renewal projects can revitalise an area and how communities can realise their full potential," said Mr Boyd.

"The latest award reflects the innovative planning and the collaborative efforts of all the stakeholders involved.

Washington Park - a new series of urban development projects.

Washington Park has been steadily picking up industry awards over the last couple of years and not without good reason, the development is noted not only for the very high standard of new sustainable environmentally aware apartments but for the innovative integration of social and private housing.

The development is a 3.5 hectare integrated urban renewal project comprising approximately 675 modern, architecturally designed apartments, of which 150 are new social housing dwellings. In addition, the community common facilities include new public library, café and retail shops.

Riverwood is a rebuilt community of social tenants, who along with their new neighbours live in a beautifully landscaped environment with excellent retail facilities, community resources such as libraries and community hubs as well as gardens and public spaces.

While the project wins an award in its own right as a project, Washington Park must also be acknowledged as the initiator of a series of renewal projects. As one of the largest urban renewal projects undertaken by the NSW Government it is widely recognised as a model for the future of housing in Sydney.

Washington Park - well received by the community.

PAYCE's Director, Dominic Sullivan said the project showcases the urban renewal credentials of PAYCE in building cohesive communities which exude a strong sense of place and belonging.

"We are very proud of the fact that the project has a very high satisfaction level with the residents and the local community, who appreciate the positive benefits that have been achieved in a relatively short time frame.

"Washington Park has set a benchmark for what can be achieved through partnerships between the government and private sectors and community participation," he said.

BB – Local community get behind Riverwood Development.

Mr Boyd said Washington Park has been a catalyst for the local community to build a vibrant lifestyle that takes advantage of all the amenities and facilities within Washington Park and the surrounding neighbourhood.

"Besides beautiful landscaped grounds and well-designed apartments, residents have some wonderful recreational and open spaces within walking distance and a range of community, transport and education services practically on their doorstep," he said.

"Construction is currently in progress to add a new community hub that houses the new public library, a café and senior citizens centre that will be of benefit to the wider community as well as Washington Park residents."

Latest phase of Washington Park's development.

"Washington Park is the culmination of all of PAYCE's experience and passion for building cohesive, inclusive communities where people feel safe and comfortable in their surroundings," commented Mr Brian Boyd.

Mr Boyd said the latest phase of construction is now well underway following the removal of the sales office and the distribution of much of its landscaping to the local school and community bodies earlier this year.

"When this stage is completed, Lakeview will house 218 private apartments and three shops, while Trinity will comprise 68 private apartments and Claremont will house 27 social apartments and a new community library and community hub," he said.

PAYCE Community initiatives.

Mr Boyd said "PAYCE enjoys a wonderful relationship with the community and has facilitated and continues to support a number of community initiatives such as local youth jobs program through the Kick Start Café, a range of programs and improvements at Riverwood North Public School, the Riverwood Community Choir and regular community events, such as fairs and multicultural celebrations".

"It's been very rewarding to see the community respond so favourably to the new opportunities and we know it will only get better as this thriving community grows in strength and number as they enjoy their new homes and the surrounding parklands" remarked Mr Boyd.
